‘Surprised and deeply disappointed’: Wake Forest AD responds to coach’s alleged homophobic slur during Tennessee loss

Wake Forest baseball coach faces backlash.

Wake Forest University is dealing with the consequences of an incident involving head baseball coach Tom Walter during an important game against the University of Tennessee. A video that seemed to show Walter using a homophobic slur during Monday night’s game led to widespread criticism and quick responses from both the coach and the university’s athletic director.

The incident happened in the bottom of the fourth inning of the decisive regional game in Knoxville, according to Knox News. With Wake Forest losing to Tennessee by four runs, a TV camera caught Walter in the dugout looking visibly upset. A short clip of the moment spread quickly on social media, leading to claims that the coach had used a swear word and a homophobic slur.

Walter said in a statement found by Yahoo Sports, “I am very sorry for my outburst in frustration last night and I recognize the hurt and disappointment it has caused. I have seen the videos and while I do not the specific moment clearly, that language doesn’t reflect my values or the standards of this program. Regardless, I own the consequences and I apologize to the University of Tennessee, to Wake Forest University and the SEC and ACC.”

Wake Forest University coach apologizes

Wake Forest athletic director John Currie said in a statement, “I am both surprised and deeply disappointed in our head baseball coach Tom Walter for his outburst during last night’s baseball game. I feel badly for those most hurt by such words. I spoke with Coach Walter immediately after the game and again this morning to address this incident, which is completely out of character for him and does not meet the standards of Wake Forest Athletics, Wake Forest University or the Atlantic Coast Conference.”

The game ended with a clear win for Tennessee, who beat Wake Forest 11-5, moving on to the Super Regionals. The loss ended Wake Forest’s season with an overall record of 39-22, following a 16-14 performance in conference play. The high-pressure game marked the end of a season that had been very successful for the Demon Deacons.

Coach Walter’s time at Wake Forest has been marked by significant success. He has taken the team to the NCAA Tournament six times, including a trip to the College World Series in 2023. He was named ACC Coach of the Year in 2023 and is the second-most winning coach in Wake Forest baseball history.

We’ve already seen incidents around sports with slurs, like an all his successful movies, he’s still gotten into hot water frequently.

This incident shows the ongoing difficulty of upholding high ethical standards in college sports. While Walter’s apology shows regret, the seriousness of the accusations and the public nature of the incident will likely have long-term effects on both the coach and the university. The university will probably face internal reviews as well as public pressure to take appropriate action, which could include disciplinary steps or sensitivity training. At this time, it is unclear what specific steps Wake Forest University will take next.
