The mockumentary sitcom The Office, which was based on the U.K. version created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, ran for nine seasons and is often regarded as the best version of the sitcom among many other international versions. One of the ongoing gags on the show was Jim Halpert playing pranks on his colleague Dwight (Rainn Wilson), as the two had their desks next to each other.

One of the most intricate pranks was Jim bringing his friend, an unnamed character played by Randall Park, as Jim in the show’s final season. The entire office at Dunder-Mifflin plays along and try to convince Dwight that Park was actually the real Jim, who congratulated Dwight because he “doesn’t see race,” since he’s Asian. It’s one of the top-notch jokes, especially as Dwight insisted that “identity theft is not a joke.”

The joke is even more useful now that John Krasinski is People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2024, with Park coming up on everyone’s feeds. “Yess, of course he deserves it,” wrote a fan under People’s official announcement with a photo of Park.

The stint continued online on different posts, all recalling the never-gets-old prank on Dwight.

The joke didn’t stop at The Office because earlier this year, Park stepped in for Krasinski again, this time as himself. To promote Krasinski’s latest directorial effort, the children’s fantasy film IF, starring Ryan Reynolds, one of the spoofs had Park impersonate Krasinski. People love dog movies. That’s why so many of them have been made, they do very well at the box office! Moviegoers have enjoyed so many movies featuring dogs over the years – including Homeward Bound, Beethoven, Dog Gone, 101 Dalmatians, Bolt, Secret Life of Pets and All Dogs Go to Heaven.

All of these dog movies have something in common: They are gentle family films meant to be enjoyed by fans of all ages. The latest movie featuring dogs as main characters called Strays is very, very different.

It’s a raunchy, R-rated comedy featuring copious amounts of curse words, street drugs, and violence. The story follows a pack of four street dogs who want to get revenge on a bad dog owner who was cruel to the main character – Reggie (played by Will Ferrell).

The script contains talk of dog poop and leg humping, and the only thing it has in common with previous films featuring dogs is… well, dogs.

Strays follows a naïve Border Terrier named Reggie who is abandoned by his mean owner — Doug (played by Saturday Night Live alum Will Forte) — to live on the streets. At first, Reggie believes Doug would never abandon him and that there must be a good explanation for his unhappy situation.

But when Reggie starts hanging around with a clever and raunchy Boston Terrier named Bug, he comes to realize that he was victimized by his owner and that Doug was heartless.

With his innocence lost, Reggie decides to seek revenge. Luckily, he is not alone on his quest, and is ed by Bug and a rag tag dog pack on an epic adventure to help Reggie get back home and make Doug pay for his cruelty.

Whether you know him as the exasperated agent from Marvel to a classic television sitcom dad, Randall Park can warm the cockles of even the coldest of hearts. His comedic stylings have become a trademark, making him a welcome presence on everyone’s television screen. But Park’s most recent venture is behind the camera in the film Shortcomings, which is currently in theaters. The film is based on the graphic novel of the same name and depicts the specific experience of Justin H. Min’s Ben, who begins searching for meaning after two women in his life seem to move past him.

But while Park exudes excitement for directing a feature film, he also tells The Hollywood Reporter it’s not without its challenges. Shortcomings and others continue to snag release dates, but due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, he cannot contractually promote it. The actor remains optimistic, as he plans to return to an unnamed series he was working on before the strike shut everything down, all the while opening up about the difficulties facing Hollywood right now:

“Amongst my actor friends and writer friends, none of us know when this is going to end. We have no idea and no sense of any imminent resolution. It feels very far away right now.”

Park is among many industry professionals who feel the heat from studios declining to pay their workers a decent wage. Refusing to acknowledge how much streaming has changed the business model, corporations continue to insist that everything should remain the same, which is ultimately not a good look.

In his career, Park has maintained his share of successes, but his work in network television gives him a personal view of the problems that are plaguing the entertainment industry. For 5 years, the actor starred in Fresh Off the Boat, a family sitcom from the perspective of an Asian-American family following their move from Chinatown in Washington D.C. to Orlando, Florida. At the time, Park had no issues making a living off of wages from the series.

“I don’t know all the issues deeply, but I know that streaming is a huge problem when it comes to residuals. But my own experience on Fresh Off the Boat felt different from a lot of what we’re dealing with today. Also, we’d do 20-episode seasons — not 8 or 10. Streaming is a different world.”

With network television, syndication was a large portion of how writers and actors alike could make money. But now that streaming has dominated Hollywood, there is little to no syndication and residuals are lacking. Now actors struggle to make ends meet, even if they are in popular shows. Park went on to compare Fresh Off the Boat to working on the prematurely canceled show Blockbuster, saying: “[It’s] very different. It’s almost the polar opposite.”

If actors like Park and Esposito struggle in this new world, there is no hope for actors trying to get their foot in the door. And the longer that studios continue to profit off of artists without proper compensation and refuse to learn the right lessons, the greedier and unsympathetic they look.

When Shawn Levy was making Free Guy, the director had conversations with a still-unnamed studio executive in which they failed miserably at comprehending any movie that wasn’t based on something, going as far as interpreting an original idea as “based on nothing.”

These are the people we’re forced to trust to keep any sort of momentum going in the film industry; momentum that we can wholly thank people like Greta Gerwig for in the first place, given the continued domination of Barbie – Warner Bros.’ billion-dollar boon – in the cultural zeitgeist.

But, right around when it seemed apparent that Barbie would be picking up some historic steam, we all caught wind of the dizzying surplus of Mattel-based movies that are apparently in the works in some form or another; Daniel Kaluuya’s genuinely intriguing Barney project notwithstanding, it sounds like Hollywood drew the wrong conclusions from Barbie‘s success.

And according to one Randall Park, who many will recognize as Marvel Cinematic Universe mainstay Jimmy Woo, the situation is probably exactly what it sounds like. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Park opened up about his very valid concerns that Hollywood could spoil the success of movies like Barbie by indulging in its IP obsession.

“I feel like, just in general, this industry is taking the wrong lessons. For example, Barbie is this massive blockbuster, and the idea is: Make more movies about toys! No. Make more movies by and about women!”

At some point, the suits will have to clue in to the fact that audiences don’t actually like certain products or subjects or anything of the sort; what they do like, believe it or not, is good movies. But, with Mattel Films locked and loaded nevertheless, it looks like we can only sit and wait to see if Hollywood missed the memo yet again.

Barbie is now playing in theaters.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos is starting to look like a full-on WandaVision reunion, only without Wanda, as another member of the original show’s cast is set to return for the new Disney Plus series.

Randall Park will be reprising his role as Jimmy Woo, the FBI agent who helped Monica Rambeau and Darcy Lewis take down S.W.O.R.D. operative Tyler Hayward at the end of WandaVision. Although Park’s character actually debuted earlier in the MCU — as he kept an eye on Scott Lang/Ant-Man while he was under house arrest in Ant-Man and the Wasp — he’s also shown having lunch with Scott near the beginning of Quantumania.

Details regarding his character’s relevance to the plot have yet to be given, although it’s likely that his connection to Agatha, S.W.O.R.D., and the events at Westview means they have no choice in bringing him back; it just makes sense, and that’s the only excuse we need. He’ll likely play a vital ing role again, similar to WandaVision. 

While some speculated Coven of Chaos would be a prequel, it seems that may not be the case if Park is returning — there wouldn’t be much reason for him to show up in the story before the events at Westview.

Filming for Coven of Chaos is already well underway, so we could be seeing the show hit Disney Plus as early as the end of this year. Now that we know Jimmy Woo is returning, we have all the more reason to be excited.

In just a matter of days now, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be upon us, bringing with it familiar and unknown faces in equal measure. Already, one of the higher-profile actors making their debut in the MCU with Wakanda Forever is open to fronting their own film, and, now, another rookie in the series says she’d embrace a specific Marvel project with open arms if it were to ever materialize.

Namora actress Mabel Cadena makes the comments about her character popping up in a hypothetical Agents of Atlas spinoff alongside Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo in an interview with Screen Rant. She says there are no conditions for her ing, and even went so far as to address Kevin Feige and Victoria Alonso directly, with the hopes that she’ll eventually receive a call from either with some good news to share.

“Let me, Kevin [Feige] and Victoria [Alonso]. Please call me. Of Course. I hope. [I’m] really excited.”

Within the cinematic universe, other of the team, which mainly consists of Asian figures already introduced, include Shang-Chi as well as Cindy Moon. Marvel is also introducing others in the non-canon Spider-Man: Freshman Year project, so, it is possible more could come from this, or things could change behind the scenes and go in a different direction as productions often can.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also features Tenoch Huerta as Namor. Some of his actions in the piece are likely to draw the ire of audiences, though they have been defended by others in the film. As well, the project will firmly move on from Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa and, in our review of the film, we gave it four stars out of five. For WGTC’s Alejandra Martinez, it marries spectacle and heart, some parts are formulaic, but the characters and their nuances along with those in the story shine a lot.

WandaVision was a series that allowed a number of longtime ing favorites from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to step out from the background and prove that they were more than capable of playing a much bigger role in the franchise. We’re not just talking about Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany’s titular duo, either, with Kat Dennings’ Darcy Lewis and Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo making the most of their moment in the spotlight.

In fact, the latter underlined his credentials as a perennial scene-stealer from the second he first showed up in Westview, sending fans wild with a callback to Ant-Man and the Wasp by revealing he’d mastered the card trick he’d been desperate to learn from Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang. The actor will return in next year’s Quantumania, but so far those calls for a Woo spinoff have yet to materialize.

Then again, if Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Vision Quest can emerge in the aftermath, then who’s to say it won’t happen? Park is certainly keeping his fingers crossed anyway, after itting in an interview with Inverse that he’s hoping to dig deeper into the character and explore something akin to the much more integral role he plays in the Marvel universe in the comics.

“Reading the comic books and learning about the character, I felt like there’s so much more to this character. The beauty of WandaVision was that we got to see more sides of Jimmy Woo. My hope is that we get lucky enough to see him more in the Marvel Universe, to see an expansion of this character. And also, hopefully, seeing him have fun, getting into sleight of hand magic and stuff.”

In the pages of Marvel, Jimmy Woo is the Nick Fury-like figure who spearheads superhero squad Agent of Atlas, who’ve been rumored to be on the way to live-action more than once in the last couple of years. Coincidence? Time will tell, but more Park in the MCU is never a bad thing.

The latest situational comedy from Netflix comes with a dash of irony, considering it’s based on the once-juggernaut video rental chain that the streaming service rendered obsolete, Blockbuster.

That’s capitalism for you, but the TV series aims to drum up nostalgia for the bygone era of brick and mortar video rental stores. Unfortunately for Netflix, there are many on social media which aren’t quite taken by the concept, specifically because it’s the Blockbuster franchise which is being celebrated.

As numerous Twitter s are pointing out, Blockbuster wasn’t exactly the plucky little corner shop that the sitcom makes it out to be. Much like the streaming service that would serve up its death sentence, it was a giant franchise which swallowed any small business that dared to compete with it. 

Numerous s of how Blockbuster took down other, smaller neighborhood video stores are circulating on Twitter at the moment.

Perhaps Netflix’s attempt at transporting us back to a different era of media consumption would’ve panned out better had it gone for a non-descript video store as its setting rather than the chain it put out of business. Then again, Netflix’s bigwigs probably wouldn’t have felt as vindicated by that route.

Blockbuster stars Randall Park as the manager of the titular Blockbuster store alongside Melissa Fumero of Brooklyn Nine Nine fame as his love interest. In case you think it’s still 1999, you don’t need to leave your house to pick this up, nor is it an option – it’s streaming on Netflix. That said, the show isn’t being received all that well critically.

Today, Netflix’s Blockbuster show ironically makes its debut in the streaming world. The comedy series inspired by the actual last location for the one-time video rental behemoth is trading on nostalgia, and apparently, this may not be a good deal for customers.

A number of critics have savaged the Randall Park-led project as of this story’s filing. At The Hollywood Reporter, Angie Han writes the work is unmemorable. She does say the cast is fine and jokes are perfectly pleasant, but it does not also adhere to its premise and instead is so broad you could retrofit the concept into any kind of business without scores of locations all around.

“Its plots hinge mostly on vague notions about the challenges of small businesses (because that’s what Timmy’s Blockbuster becomes without a corporate overlord) and the importance of community (mostly defined here as in-person transactions and the occasional marketing event).”

At The A.V. Club, Saloni Gajjar was much harsher. In her review, she says the piece does not have nearly enough laughs. It is also uneven and predictable, and in an era where shows are picked apart by fans, what would be a crucial plot aspect goes unexplained.

“There’s not much to glean about why this store hasn’t been shuttered, which feels like quietly pushing a major plot point aside. The location isn’t faring well, so what makes it special? But apparently we don’t have to worry about that. Instead, the focus is on Timmy’s perseverance to keep it going despite a rent increase, eviction notice, rivalries with other stores in the strip mall, and other day-to-day challenges.”

From here, The Atlantic’s Megan Garber writes about how on the show no one seems to act their age. She says characters appear to be in suspended animation and Park’s Timmy helps out his parents while also fighting with kids in ways he should not at his age.

“He causes a small crisis by getting into a rapidly escalating prank war with two teenagers. He is, despite all his efforts, barely holding the store together. He is not a father in a literal sense; he is a middle-aged man who is living a life of delayed adulthood.”

The show will have 10 episodes initially. On Rotten Tomatoes right now, the show has a 13 percent rotten rating based on eight reviews. For audiences, assessments have been kinder. Here, the show has a 60 percent positive rating based on 10 s who posted.

Yes, Jimmy Woo himself Randall Park is keeping his fingers crossed that we could one day get to watch the solo adventures of the card-carrying FBI agent, preferably with Kat Dennings’ Darcy Lewis by his side. The Ant-Man 2 alum envisions such a project as being an “X-Files-styled” series featuring Woo investigating weird occurrences. You can’t see you wouldn’t watch that.

At this current point in time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe infamously features a wide range of scintillating characters who have either already received their own Marvel-fronted spinoff series and/or movie or are on the verge of receiving it. And while the latest chatter in the MCU has been centered around the ever-popular She-Hulk, the actor behind another Marvel fan-favorite is apparently holding out hope that a future series will focus on their character of Jim Woo.

Upon his initial arrival in the MCU back in 2018 with Ant-Man and the Wasp, fans immediately found themselves enamored with Randall Park’s Jim Woo, prompting a strong campaign for him to finally receive the spotlight that he so rightfully deserves. The beloved character, portrayed by Park, has subsequently made appearances in other forms of Marvel media, including WandaVision (2021) and Aquaman (2018).

Fast-forward to the recent release of the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania trailer, which includes the aforementioned agent, and the push for Woo to obtain his own Disney Plus series has returned — an idea that Park himself seems to be fond of. As per ComicBook.com, when asked about the idea of Woo leading an “X-Files-styled” series, Park insisted that he “wants to” partake in such a popular project.

As of now, Marvel has yet to confirm, or even slightly hint, at a Jimmy Woo spinoff actually happening. Still, MCU fanatics know a thing or two about holding out hope for a series — yes, we’re looking at you, She-Hulk season two — so the possibility for Woo’s MCU spotlight is far from over.

In the meantime, folks can witness Woo’s antics in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which arrives on Feb. 17, 2023.
