Not even nay-sayers or Nic Pizzolatto devotees could rain on Issa López’s parade after, despite the controversy, HBO renewed True Detective for a new season, with the Night Country showrunner set to return. After López took over from the Italian-American series creator Pizzolatto as the showrunner for Night Country, it didn’t take long for it to become the latest entry in the canon of unreasonably targeted and hated female-led projects in male-dominated spaces. 4d5i70

The first season of True Detective might be worshipped among a certain best-avoided subsection of male social media s, but López’s Night Country broke all the viewership records, beating the likes of Succession, Tokyo Vice, and Young Sheldon to the top spot of Max’s most-streamed shows globally, per FlixPatrol. Season 4 drew in 12.7 million cross-platform viewers to become the show’s most-watched installment to date, Variety reported. It has spent 23 days on FlixPatrol’s Max Top 10, taking the first-place crown in over 40 countries.

Night Country stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, who investigate the disappearance of eight men from a research station in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Following the first episode’s release on Jan. 14, numerous half-star and one-star reviews flooded the show’s Rotten Tomatoes page, among many other, much more positive comments, leading López to accuse haters of an attempt to sabotage her season. The excessive backlash found online despite a harmless, if imperfect, season backs the showrunner’s accusations.

Meanwhile, Pizzolatto was ungracefully stoking the fire on his Instagram page by sharing some shockingly destructive rants about López’s season. “Just want to send love to Nic Pizzolatto. I can only imagine how it feels to have his all-time classic dialogue butchered and misappropriated like it was last night. (…) So insulting calling it True Detective,” one of them said.

The season’s 92 percent critical Rotten Tomatoes score, based on 190 professional reviews, begs to differ. Season 2, written by Pizzolatto, and largely considered the show’s weakest, sits at 47 percent. Unlike its Alaskan setting, Night Country was warmly received by the majority of viewers.

True Detective: Night Country is available to stream in full now on Max.

Questions We're Still Asking After A 'True Detective' Finale #308]]>
<![CDATA[

It’s fair to say True Detective: Night Country won’t go down as many fans’ favorite season of the anthology crime drama. Although it’s somewhat difficult to ascertain if the show’s poor critical reception is down to review-bombing or because it just really is that bad, it’s clear to anyone watching True Detective season 4 that it’s a long way from the quality of the show’s acclaimed first season, even if it does attempt to recapture that glory by featuring some unexpected callbacks and connections.

Night Country‘s mixed success, however, is nothing to do with leading star Jodie Foster, who plays Chief Liz Danvers, an Alaskan cop who teams up with Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) to investigate the mysterious disappearances of eight scientists from a top-secret research station. Along the way, Danvers must face her own personal trauma owing to a devastating incident from her past, the specifics of which are never spoken about throughout the season. However, the Night Country finale at last tells all.

Holden Danvers’ fate in True Detective: Night Country, explained 27426v

In prior Night Country episodes, we had glimpsed a spirit boy in bed with her, not to mention that there seemed to be a greater significance to a polar bear stuffed animal missing its eye and the song “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles. In the finale, the answers are revealed. Well, kind of. In short, yes, Danvers had a son, named Holden, but he and her late husband, Jake, died in a car crash. Liz and Leah, who was her husband’s biological child, were the only survivors and Liz adopted Leah has her own afterward.

The truth comes out during the finale when Liz falls into frozen waters after she glimpses her son through the ice, which marks the character’s first interaction with the spirit world that Navarro has been connected to throughout. Holden’s spirit speaks with Navarro and asks her to tell his mother that he is still with her, which leads Navarro to cover one of Liz’s eyes with her hand. This calls back to the polar bear with the missing eye, Holden’s toy. It’s not clarified but maybe we can infer that “Twist and Shout” was playing in the car when it crashed.

The way this plotline was handled has definitely earned the ire of True Detective viewers, with many feeling that they still have many questions about Jake and Holden’s deaths that weren’t answered. “It’s so strange. It feels like so much was left on the editing room floor,” posited one Reddit . Meanwhile, others felt that making a big mystery out of Liz’s backstory wasn’t worth all the hassle. “We’ve known this since the very first episode but the show treated it like there was more to it,” another Redditor argued.

True Detective season 5 — which hasn’t even been confirmed yet but seems a given — the onus is on you to do better.

What even is the Yellow King?]]>

The following article contains spoilers for True Detective.

HBO’s True Detective season 1 was the mystery heard around the world. With its eerie philosophies and immersive storytelling, it seemed impossible that lightning would strike twice.

And in a way, it hasn’t. The season following Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rust Cohle’s (Matthew McConaughey) quest to uncover Carcosa was largely maligned. True Detective became an anthology series, with each subsequent season failing to recapture the magic of the first. In season 4, entitled True Detective: Night Country, Nic Pizzolatto has departed as showrunner, leaving the reins to Issa López, which has given the series a different flavor. But that doesn’t mean the show’s legacy and mythology have been completely forgotten.

What is True Detective: Night Country About? 2g6i2m

Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in 'True Detective: Night Country'

In a setup that wouldn’t be out of place in a John Carpenter film, season 4 of True Detective has a chilly premise. In the town of Ennis, Alaska, the citizens hunker down in preparation for weeks of complete darkness. At the same time, Chief of Police, Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster), investigates a local research station when a group of scientists go missing.

Liz and her police force find the scientists frostbitten and frozen in the ice, posed in a ghoulish display. Meanwhile, state trooper, Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), is obsessed with the death of an indigenous woman named Annie, which was never solved. As the story progresses, both Liz and Evangeline have to come to with the fact that their cases are related.

In True Detective fashion, this poses somewhat of a problem. The two officers happen to hate each other following their partnership on Annie’s case. They could not be more dissimilar. A middle-aged white woman in a position of authority, Liz seems to have nothing but contempt for Evangeline, often making disparaging comments about her heritage.

Evangeline, on the other hand, is young and hungry, unable to let go of how she failed Annie. They are spiritual successors of Marty and Rust, who had similar hangups before they banded together to find the missing kids in rural Louisiana. But this isn’t the only connection to the landmark season of True Detective. Season 4 has a more tangible connection to the highly-rated first season of the series.

How does season 4 connect to season 1? 6n604j

Via HBO

At first, it seems any connections to True Detective season 1 are entirely coincidental. As an anthology series, there have been no connections before. While others of its ilk, such as American Horror Story, seem to pride themselves on connecting every plot into a grander scheme, True Detective was comfortable letting the stories lead themselves. But after Pizzolatto’s departure, things seemed to have changed.

Setting the season in Alaska is the first major connection. While season 1 takes place in a much warmer climate, Alaska is ingrained in the trauma of the series. Most notable in Rust’s backstory. While born in Texas, Rust spent most of his formative years in Alaska with his father. Mentioned only briefly by name, Rust’s father, Travis Cohle, could just be another example of Rust’s tragic backstory. Though he lived with his father for many years, the two never quite bonded. However, he knew enough that his father was diagnosed with leukemia, as he tells detectives Papania (Tory Kittles) and Gilbough (Michael Potts).

This idea comes full circle in the first few episodes of season 4. Interspersed with the central mystery are scenes of Rose Aguineau (Fiona Shaw), who seems to be having visions of a ghostly man on the ice. Several times she refers to the man as Travis, before telling Evangeline the whole story. The man is indeed Travis Cohle, with whom she had a relationship. After being diagnosed with leukemia, he walked out onto the ice to die rather than suffer from cancer. There is no doubt about it. The man that Rose is seeing is Rust’s father. To make matters even stranger, that is not the only connection to season 1.

Will we finally learn about Carcosa? 352249

true detective spiral
Photo via Max

One of the biggest mysteries of season 1 was the meaning behind many of the literary references spoken by the main antagonist, Errol Childress (Glenn Fleshler). The killer often spoke of Carcosa and the Yellow King. And while there may be some mysteries never to be solved, True Detective: Night Country may be planning on lifting the veil just a little.

Symbols were also a large part of the freshman series, the most visible of which was the spiral. This symbol appeared all over the place in connection to the murders, and now it is rearing its ugly head in Ennis. Clark (Raymond McDonnell), the only scientist who remains missing, has this tattoo on his chest. It is the same one that Annie had on her back. Liz and Evangeline also encounter it after discovering that the two were lovers and shared a trailer for their rendez vous. The love nest in question seems to have sprung out of the mind of Rust Cohle on the hunt for the killer. Filled to the brim with disturbing imagery, the spiral is also drawn on the ceiling of the trailer.

Other connections seem more secondary, but just as important. In a throwaway line, Liz mentions that Tuttle funds the scientists’ research. The Tuttle family were the very same people who were abducting children for their strange cult in season 1. Most of these mysteries have yet to be solved, but there is no doubt that Night Country is heavily influenced by one of the greatest seasons of television.

Is the poor audience rating genuine or something more organized?]]>
<![CDATA[

For months, eager fans have been awaiting the first episode of True Detective: Night Country.

The fourth season of the highly regarded crime mystery anthology series has some serious star power driving it, with Jodie Foster taking on the lead role of Liz Danvers, a canny detective who is investigating the disappearance of eight researchers from an Arctic research station.

Although only one episode has dropped so far, the internet is already ablaze with controversy about the show (shocking, we know). This is most clearly shown by the disparity in True Detective: Night Country‘s RT score, which currently sits in the nineties for critics but is lingering at a lowly 69 percent for audiences.

So, is the series a bit middling, or are misogynistic fanboys of the iconic first season just giving it a bad rating because it’s a women-led production? We look into whether or not True Detective: Night Country is bad or just getting review-bombed, and why the controversy exists in the first place.

Why would viewers review bomb True Detective: Night Country? 4s203

As anybody who’s been on the internet for longer than five minutes knows, it’s rife with misogyny. It’s also rife with racism, misandry, homophobia, ableism, and all the rest of the hateful ideologies that make up bigotry bingo, but those online do seem to have a special predication for despising women.

The newest outing in the True Detective universe is the first one to have a female lead (prior seasons were led by Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, and Mahershala Ali). And given that Foster is the most visible lesbian in the industry, there’s sure to be a double whammy of hatred aimed at the series.

The other leading part is played by the former boxer Kali Reis, which is another bone of contention for those who are set on hating the fourth installment of True Detective. In the depths of Reddit, some are arguing she only received the role because she ticks the boxes when it comes to diversity. Never mind that Reis has been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.

The acclaimed first season of the show did have a bit of a masculine energy to it, and given how fickle and obsessive fandoms are, it’s not surprising that having a women-led cast would get the backs up of some of the more incel-adjacent viewers.

Of course, this kind of unwarranted hatred from a group of fans isn’t limited to men who hate women. Just ask one of the more unhinged Swifties about someone who’s perceived to have wronged the singer. The impulse to spew hatred at something because of what it represents is one that the internet seems to have deepened in many, and may be behind the negativity that’s souring the newest season of True Detective.

What did True Detective: Night Country showrunner Issa López say about review bombing? 1h4y1d

As a creative you always want to defend your work, but it still was quite surprising to see True Detective: Night Country showrunner Issa López come out swinging against the negative RT reviews the show was getting. As per Variety, she tweeted the following:

“So, if you liked last night’s [episode] of [True Detective: Night Country], and have a Rotten Tomatoes , maybe head over there and leave an audience review? The bros and hardcore fanboys of [Season 1] have made it a mission to drag the rating down, and it’s kind of sad, considering all the 5 star ones.”

López is bound to defend her project, but later reconsidered her words, deleting that tweet and replacing it with:

So, is ‘True Detective: Night Country’ actually bad or is it getting review-bombed? 6j3h5c

There are legitimate criticisms of the series, like the poorly rendered CGI animals. The True Detective universe demands that viewers are pulled in, but the dodgy use of the technology might be enough to smash the suspension of disbelief for some. There’s also a worry that the idea of having two no-nonsense lead characters will stem their development. But that’s something that can only be discussed when we’re deep into the season.

One fair thing to say is that the first episode of True Detective: Night Country wasn’t as good as the scintillating, captivating season one pilot. However, as that episode is widely considered to be one of the best openers in television history, it’s not a fair standard to hold it up to.

When it comes down to it, True Detective: Night Country is worth watching if you’re a fan of the anthology series, but isn’t quite as perfect as the first season. With that said, there’s a big difference between one and five stars, and it undoubtedly sits towards the higher end of that spectrum.

Our verdict: inconclusive. Let’s see how the rest of the season pans out.

Alexandra Daddario has had a full and illustrious career for over a decade. Perhaps viewers may get nostalgic ing her from the maligned Percy Jackson films that stopped being made. Playing Annabeth, the daughter of Athena and a demigod, Daddario made an impression.

Or it could be her more recent work that springs to mind. After a tenure in the Max series The White Lotus, which capitalizes on cringe humor, she has gone on to lead her own series in AMC’s Mayfair Witches. But it was one of her smaller appearances that became one of Daddario’s best roles in television. Appearing as a ing part in HBO’s magnum opus, True Detective, Daddario was an irable addition to the cast. And that is saying something when in company with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.

When the first season of True Detective premiered in 2014, it reset the expectations for what television should be. Told in three separate eras, season 1 unfolds a gripping mystery wrapped up in a moving character drama. Seasons that followed never quite captured the magic of the philosophical themes and character progression, making the freshman season of True Detective stand the test of time.

At the heart of the story was Harrelson in the role of Marty Hart. Though a family man and ⏤ as the title suggests ⏤ a true detective, Marty’s Achilles’ heel is his extramarital affairs. The first the audience sees him with is Daddario’s character, Lisa Tragentti. A court stenographer, Lisa meets Marty in a professional setting that turns unequivocally unprofessional.

She’s aware that he’s married, and she isn’t looking for a long-term commitment. This dynamic reveals a double standard as Marty demands fidelity from her while he is actively cheating on his wife. Daddario doesn’t stick around for the whole season, as the relationship inevitably goes up in flames, but the few episodes she appears in are significant not just for Marty’s character progression, but as a showcase for the Mayfair Witches actor’s talent. Daddario opened up to MTV News about the challenges of her intimate scenes with Harrelson that required nudity.

“I think one thing about this role for me was that it was a huge challenge for me, and I saw it as a good challenge. I saw it as an interesting challenge. I really wanted to be part of the show, and I understood why the nudity and all of that was required of the character… The character is really different from anything that I’ve done before. The nudity was just part of that.”

Daddario further elaborated that working opposite Harrelson made her more comfortable. The seasoned actor helped cultivate a professional atmosphere, which put the young actor at ease. Ultimately, Lisa is the final straw that breaks the back of Marty’s marriage (for the first time). The messy resolution to their dalliance shows how inept Marty is at keeping his personal life in order and his regrettable treatment of women. Daddario was a small but integral component of a show that remains a masterclass in storytelling.

The phenomenal show is as captivating as anything else on TV, but how can you watch all three of its incredible seasons?]]>
<![CDATA[

When it comes to anthology crime dramas, True Detective is the undisputed chief.

When the first season came out all the way back in 2014, it quickly became must-watch television. The hype around the mysterious show was so intense that it was even being compared to HBO greats like The Sopranos. The second and third seasons weren’t quite as epoch-defining, but viewing figures remained high, and the general quality of the show remained incredibly high.

The sheer starpower involved was a sure sign of the show’s brilliance, but the smart writing and tension-heavy plots ensured it became a real hit. Plus, as we all know, there are few more compelling pieces of content than crime dramas.

Season one saw Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Tory Kittles take on the case of a serial killer with links to the occult. The next season, which came out a year later, starred Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Kelly Reilly, and Vince Vaughn. The setting moved to California, and the mystery at the heart of the show was the death of a corrupt politician. The third season, starring Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, and Ray Fisher, involved the search for some missing children, and was set in the Ozarks.

Now, a fourth season, set in the wilds of Alaska and entitled True Detective: Night Country, is about to premiere. Starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, the first episode is out on Jan. 14 2024. If you’re a fan of the show and want to know how to rewatch the previous gripping seasons, or haven’t yet had the pleasure of entering the True Detective world and want to know how to go about it, then you’re in luck. Here’s our easy guide on how to watch True Detective.

How to watch True Detective 6h151u

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to watch True Detective, especially if you’re based in the U.S.

If you’re a subscriber to HBO’s streaming service, Max, you will have access to the previous three seasons of True Detective, as well as the new season when it is released.

If you’re not a HBO or Max subscriber, then you can find all three previous seasons available to stream on Hulu.

Additionally, you can rent all three seasons from Prime Video and Apple TV, if you’d rather not purchase a new streaming service just to watch True Detective. This is also a great option for those outside the U.S. who can’t find the show on their preferred streaming service.

That’s not to say that you can’t stream the show if you’re outside the U.S. — U.K.-based fans of True Detective can watch it on Sky Go or Now TV. If you’re a Sky subscriber, you can even watch season 4 live on the Sky Showcase or Sky Atlantic channels. The new episodes will air at 2am U.K. time.

For Australian viewers, True Detective is available on Binge and Foxtel Now. Canadians can find it on Crave.

If you’re committed to your Netflix , then we have bad news: no HBO shows are on Netflix, and frankly we don’t see a time when they will be.

He's always a pleasure to watch on screen, but in which roles does the Oscar winner truly show off his supreme talent?]]>
<![CDATA[

Some actors have such a dynamic screen presence and natural gravitas that you can’t help but be drawn directly into their world. Mahershala Ali is one such performer.

The Californian’s career has gone off like a rocket in recent years, running the gamut from Oscar-winning film performances to Emmy-nominated turns in celebrated dramas. He’s even set to star in the 2025 reboot of the classic Blade films should Marvel’s intended iteration ever achieve liftoff.

Whether he’s sparkling on television or wowing audiences on the big screen, seeing Ali’s name on a cast list ensures that you’ll get at least one standout performance. That said, some jewels shine brighter than others, so if you’re looking to experience the living master class that is Mahershala Ali, here’s where we think you should begin your journey.

Moonlight 355p5

Ali’s performance in this astounding coming-of-age film bagged him his first Oscar for Best ing Actor. Moonlight is a slow-moving but utterly engaging film that chronicles the life of Chiron, a young, queer, Black boy (and later man) who comes to with his sexuality and how it fits in his image of himself as a Black man. Ali plays Juan, a drug dealer who ends up becoming somewhat of a father figure to Chiron in the moving first act of the film. Despite the character’s rough edges, Ali ensures that Juan’s humanity shines through, and you can feel the pain that he goes through as Chiron begins to reject him. Who would have thought that a crack dealer with a heart of gold would leave you in tears?

Free State of Jones 5xr3t

Historical dramas that focus on the American Civil War can be hit or miss, but this incredible story about what happened in Jones County, Mississippi during and after the conflict needles through the tough topics without ignoring them, leading to an enthralling watch. Matthew McConaughey stars as Newton Knight, a former confederate medic who switched sides to the one that didn’t want to enslave people, and Ali is excellent as Moses Washington, a freed man who leads of a group of former slaves that help other Black people find their way to freedom in the Deep South.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 4p6w2w

There’s been plenty of talk about superhero fatigue plaguing recent Marvel and DC releases, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (and the follow up, Across the Spider-Verse) have shown that there’s still an appetite for heroes, but only if the film is actually interesting and well-made (sorry, MCU fans). The first Miles Morales outing is a high-octane, beautifully-made flick that’s as aesthetically pleasing as it is addictive to watch, and Ali’s great voice acting is vitally important to its success. He plays Miles’ uncle Aaron Davis (also Prowler), a grafitti artist who shares his love of the art with a young Miles.

Roxanne Roxanne 4f2x4i

This musical biopic about one of the first female rappers might not stick entirely to the truth, but it certainly makes for a great watch. Roxanne Roxanne follows the incredible life of Roxanne Shante, who as a teen rose to prominence in the New York rap world and became a central figure in one of the first diss track wars in hip hop history. Chanté Adams is phenomenal in the title role, but she’s aided by a great Ali performance as James Cross, a drug dealer who became romantically entangled with the young Shante before becoming abusive.

Green Book 734o2h

The horrors of segregation and the barbaric nature of the Jim Crow era remain within living memory, but films like Green Book are vital to keep this history vivid and present so it doesn’t get repeated. Ali co-stars alongside Aragorn ⏤ sorry, Viggo Mortensen ⏤ as Don Shirley and Tony Lip respectively, and both do a fine job in building tension where the script is sometimes lacking despite the rich subject matter. Shirley was a famous Black pianist and Lip was his driver and bodyguard, ensuring that he could perform in the South without fear of retribution from racist whites. The title of the film refers to The Negro Motorist Green Book, a guide to non-racist establishments in the South that Black road-trippers and motorists used to secure their safety when heading through America’s racist heartlands. Ali won his second Oscar for Best ing Actor for his masterful portrayal of Shirley.

Ramy n2d3z

This wonderfully funny series about an Egyptian-American is as insightful as it is delightful, but it carries the heft needed to tackle some of the less humorous topics that come up. Ramy Youssef stars as the eponymous character and brings a great charm to the role. Ali appears in season 2 as Sheikh Ali Malik, a calm, collected figure of authority who is the perfect comic foil to Ramy’s endearing immaturity, and he plays the part sumptuously.

Hidden Figures 19636z

Ali doesn’t have the biggest role in this biopic about three Black female mathematicians who made history, but he sparkles when he is on screen. Hidden Figures chronicles the tale of this trio of extraordinary women who played a large role in the success of the American space program: Katherine Goble Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe). Ali plays Jim Johnson, a soldier who doubts Katherine’s math abilities, before falling for and eventually marrying her. This is a heartwarming watch that also imparts some vital history lessons on the viewer.

Swan Song 3l2e6e

Ali shows that he can do sci-fi, too, in this emotionally fraught thinker of a film from Apple TV. He takes on a heavy role as a terminally ill man who is told he can be cloned, thus saving his family from the heartache of losing him. Although the movie itself does sometimes veer into overt melancholy, Ali keeps things going with his powerhouse of a performance. With a lesser actor, this wouldn’t be worth watching, but with him front and center, the runtime simply flies.

True Detective 4k295u

Ali played the lead in season 3 of this acclaimed crime series and is magnetic as state police detective Wayne Hays. The eight episodes jump between different times over a three-decade period, but Ali’s consistency and brilliance remain throughout. This particular season of the anthology follows Hays as he tries to crack the case of two missing kids. It’s a pulsating watch, driven by another mesmerizing Ali performance.

House of Cards f6s6i

Ali had a major role in the first four seasons of this iconic American remake of the British political drama, which many credit with being the series that truly announced the arrival of tech companies as content makers. He plays Remy Danton, a lobbyist and lawyer who eventually becomes the president’s Chief of Staff. As always, he’s absolutely brilliant in every scene he’s in, and while we don’t condone the dubious past behavior of leading man Kevin Spacey, we think this is still worth watching if you’re an Ali fan.

Despite the promotion, HBO has yet to set a release date for ‘True Detective: Night Country.’]]>
<![CDATA[

Jodie Foster‘s triumphant return to the small screen as a series regular on the fourth season of HBO’s True Detective is currently making headlines after a photo from the set with fellow actress Kali Reis and a new clip was released to the general public.

Before Foster’s successful movie career, the last time the star played a recurring character on a television show was in 1974’s Paper Moon. In True Detective‘s fourth season, titled True Detective: Night Country, Foster will portray the role of Liz Danvers while Reis plays Evangeline Navarro.

True Detective: Night Country, which started filming last year, will follow Danvers and Navarro as they try to solve the case of six missing men that operated the Tsalal Arctic Research Station. The series will also star John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc, and Joel D. Montgrand.

On Feb. 15, while promoting True Detective: Night Country, the show’s official Twitter ed a photo of Foster and Reis with the caption, “Meet your new True Detectives. Green Detective, anyone?]]>
<![CDATA[

Greg Berlanti’s promised Green Lantern series has been set on the scrapheap and the writer has officially parted ways with current DC Studios co-CEOs Peter Gunn and Peter Safran, according to an announcement by the studio today. Instead, GL fans can expect an entirely new series titled Lanterns that will focus on the interplanetary policing nature of the Green Lantern Corps and will have a gritty feel similar to Nic Pizzolatto’s True Detective.

“Greg’s vision was more of a space opera that he wanted to do and our vision for it is a much more a True Detective, terrestrial-based investigation story,” Safran described, confirming the series will take place on Earth. Safran described the new series as one of the most important shows DC has in development. “This plays a really big role in leading into the main story we are telling across film and TV,” Safran noted, indicating Hal Jordan fans will see their hero finally take his place on the big screen thirteen years after the 2011 movie featuring Ryan Reynolds (post-credit sequences notwithstanding).

Berlanti’s series was to focus on a variety of Lanterns, including Golden Age GL Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz. Lanterns will feature original Silver Age Green Lantern Hal Jordan as well as the much hoped-for Lantern John Stewart, in his first live-action debut. No casting news was announced at today’s press conference but Safran did confirm that unlike past DC television projects fans can expect the same actor they see on their small screens to show up on the big one as well. “Anybody that we cast as John Stewart or Hal Jordan, they will then crossover into the movie side of things as well,” Safran added. “That’s important to us. We don’t want in any way that series to feel like stepchildren or lesser than. It’s just another way to tell the story.”

It could be the peak of the "Peak TV" era.]]>
<![CDATA[

The age of “Peak TV” has been going on for so long that it’s no longer a phase, trend, or a craze. Instead, we should all just get used to the fact that episodic content is better than it’s ever been, and it’ll stay that way for the foreseeable future unless something goes disastrously wrong. We’ve been spoiled for choice dating back well over a decade, but you could make a very well-founded argument for definitively labeling the first season of True Detective as the single finest run of them all.

It wasn’t exactly a slam-dunk during awards season, though, with Cary Joji Fukunaga’s Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series the only major trophy it picked up, even if the hard-boiled psychological crime thriller did land nominations in virtually every notable acting, directing, writing, and technical category across the Emmys and the Golden Globes.

True_Detective_Season_One_Woody_Matthew

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are utterly astounding in their roles as Rust Cohle and Marty Hart in the time-hopping nonlinear tale that finds the aforementioned homicide detectives continuing to investigate the murder of a prostitute that occurred in 1995, with the case drastically altering and shaping their pasts, presents, and futures.

All you need to do is say “ that six-minute tracking shot from True Detective">and there’s another on the way with two-time Academy Award winner Jodie Foster heading up the ensemble, but the law of diminishing returns will do nothing to dilute the impact and impeccable quality of its first eight installments.

'True Detective: Night Country' starring Jodie Foster is ordered to series.]]>
<![CDATA[

HBO has ordered True Detective: Night Country to series starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

Warner Media made the announcement, and confirmed Issa López will be the showrunner, writer and director. López is a Mexican writer/director whose 2017 feature Tigers Are Never Afraid, a dark fairytale about children caught in the Mexican drug cartel wars, was championed by Guillermo del Toro and Neil Gaiman. She will also executive produce along with Foster. The news comes in conjunction with the logline, which reads as follows:

“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

True Detective is an Emmy award-winning series and each season it takes on a new crime with a new set of partners who have to solve it. Opposite Foster will be Navarro, best-known as a professional boxer and motivational speaker, and if it’s anything like the previous stories, it’ll go into dark spaces and uncover uncomfortable secrets they’ll have to overcome.

Executive VP of HBO programming sca Orsi said of the series, “We are tremendously excited to return to the True Detective franchise and to be working with the multi-talented Issa López, whose singular vision for her Night Country installment will be beautifully realized with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the starring roles.”

Reis was seen in the indie film Catch the Fair One, in which she played a former boxer looking for her missing sister. She developed the movie with director Josef Kubota Wladyka, and for her role, she received a special Jury Mention for Best Actress at the Tribeca Film Festival. Night Country will be her biggest project to date.

Foster isn’t a stranger to the crime-thriller genre. She famously played Clarice in Silence of the Lambs, which has since turned into a new drama series starring Rebecca Breeds that will move from CBS to Paramount Plus for season two. Foster previously announced that she’d be taking a step back from acting, but also shared that she missed being on sets and hanging out with people. It’s evident that True Detective: Night Country was the right story to bring her back.

More misconduct allegations leveled at ‘No Time to Die’ director Cary Fukunaga 1r114i https://wegotthiscovered.moviesx.org/movies/more-misconduct-allegations-leveled-at-no-time-to-die-director-cary-fukunaga/ https://wegotthiscovered.moviesx.org/movies/more-misconduct-allegations-leveled-at-no-time-to-die-director-cary-fukunaga/#respond <![CDATA[Beau Paul]]> Tue, 31 May 2022 16:58:15 +0000 <![CDATA[Celebrities]]> <![CDATA[Movies]]> <![CDATA[News]]> <![CDATA[Cary Fukunaga]]> <![CDATA[Masters of the Air]]> <![CDATA[No Ads]]> <![CDATA[No Time to Die]]> <![CDATA[True Detective]]> https://wegotthiscovered.moviesx.org/?p=1223068 <![CDATA[
'He needs to be stopped.']]>
<![CDATA[

Weeks after True Detective director Cary Fukunaga declined to comment on multiple allegations of sexual misconduct from several women, anonymous sources have emerged from the set of his latest project to describe an abusive pattern of behavior when dealing with actors and crew .

The sources who worked on the production of AppleTV+’s Masters of the Air miniseries told Rolling Stone that Fukunaga regularly engaged in “absolute, clear-cut abuse of power.”

Fukunaga has denied the claim through a statement made with his attorney, Michael Plonsker, which read in part, “There is nothing salacious about pursuing friendships or consensual romantic relationships with women,” and “no one ever — not once — voiced such sentiments to” the director regarding his behavior. “He creates a work environment that is creative, collaborative and welcoming to all,” the statement continued, as reported by Rolling Stone.

The allegations come on the heels of claims by actor and skateboarder Rachelle Vinberg, who stated that Fukunaga engaged in a relationship with her when she was 18 and he was 38. Sisters Hannah and Cailin Loesch also made complaints that Fukunaga attempted to seduce them into a threesome and then gaslighted them afterward.

The posts were liked or commented upon by many of Fukunaga’s former partners, including Margaret Qualley, who “liked” Vinberg’s original post and Kristin Froseth, who shared the post. Actor Lizzi Swanson also shared the post and later told Rolling Stone that she “knew Cary for a time and though he never physically acted upon anything, the emotional and mental patterns and manipulative tactics” that she experienced “are very, very much the same” as what Vinberg had described in her post. “It’s absolutely fucked up and disgusting,” she added. “I believe them and stand by them fully. He needs to be stopped.”

Writer Nick Cuse, who worked with Fukunaga on Netflix’s Maniac, also lent his to the allegations, saying Fukunaga used similar manipulations to earn writing credit for work that Cuse had performed. In his own Instagram Story, Cuse stated that Fukunaga was the “worst human being I have ever met in my life,” according to Indiewire.
