One of the more compelling aspects of romance as a film genre is how it can leverage the parasocial attachment between the public and the celebrities they ire. This to say, if you look at a movie like Anyone But You — the rom-com sleeper hit from 2023 — it’s easy to trace its box office success back to the fact that it stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell; two high-profile movie stars that you can casually hang out with and observe the attractiveness of, per rom-com parameters. 14671v

This is one of the tools in We Live in Time‘s bag of tricks, given its pairing of Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield of Black Widow and Spider-Man fame, but it has a lot more going for it than two popular, in-demand thespians kissing each other. One of those things is its current prominence on the Max charts.

Per FlixPatrol, We Live in Time is living it up at the top of Max’s film charts in the United States at the time of writing, beating out a quartet of Final Destination films in the rankings (namely, the first, second, third, and fifth entries in the franchise, which occupy the charts’ second, fourth, sixth, and fifth placements, respectively).

Elsewhere, Noah Wyle continues to dazzle audiences in The Pitt, which is enjoying its own spell atop the United States’ Max television rankings at the time of writing. Wyle, who portrays the show’s lead character Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, already has quite the medical drama prestige thanks to his time as John Carter on ER. That performance earned him nominations for three Golden Globes and five Emmy Awards.

We Live in Time stars Pugh and Garfield as Almut and Tobias, two thirty-somethings whose decade-long relationship is tracked from the moment of their first meeting, all the way to life after cancer takes Almut from Tobias and their daughter.

The film’s defining characteristic is its non-linear narrative, which causes us to jump around the timeline of Tobias’ and Almut’s relationship. This serves to highlight the relationship we all have to time, and how we primarily experience it through our most emotionally powerful memories, rather than those that most recently occurred.

This furthermore encourages viewers to consider how important it is to create the most meaningful memories possible, which is additionally emphasized by our early knowledge that Almut is going to die at the end of the film. This knowledge forces this family to carefully consider what they’re going to do with their extremely limited time together.

The emotional goal of We Live in Time, then, is to help us realize that our time on Earth — cancer or no cancer — is fundamentally limited, and so the best use of that time involves creating as much beauty as we can with one another. That’s a story worth exposing oneself to, even if you flock to it for no other reason than wanting to see Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield do the kissy-kissy.

Ryan Reynolds is not just a comedy star but is also renowned for his witty humor in real life. But when faced with a mocking insult at the expense of Andrew Garfield, the actor had no option but to become serious.

Each year, Variety pairs actors together for a filmed chat where they talk about their craft, their experiences in the industry, and all sorts of other things that come up. Called Actors on Actors, it has some interesting pairs — such as an chat between Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds.

That’s one interesting combination, right?

Well, not everyone was happy with the pairing. One X/Twitter took to the platform to offer their opinion on the match in a since-protected tweet, seemingly criticizing the segment’s quality that would be, in their opinion, diminished by a comedy-centric actor like Reynolds talking about his funny roles.

“Andrew Garfield talking about playing a husband and father who’s [sic] wife decides to forgo cancer treatment and Ryan Reynolds talking about playing Deadpool.”

The tweet draws a distinction between comedic acting and dramatic acting, the implication being that the conversation match-up is poor, and while everyone is entitled to an opinion, this is one opinion that didn’t go over well with everyone. Ryan Reynolds himself became aware of the tweet and responded, giving his two cents on the situation, letting the one who posted the polarising criticism and everyone else who agreed with the opinion that comedy isn’t as “effortless” as it looks.

Ryan is quick to praise Andrew’s performance, calling him a “genius.” He then goes on to offer a well-considered defense of comedic acting, saying that both disciplines are difficult — but for different reasons. Dramatic acting is difficult because the audience has to see and feel the work that goes into it, but comedic acting is the exact opposite, where if the audience can see the work that goes into it, it falls flat. Dramatic acting “feels visceral and effective” and it’s because the audience is meant to see the difficulty behind it. In contrast, Reynolds finds comedic acting is “meant to look and feel effortless.”

s on X agreed with Reynolds, taking to the platform to show their . Much of the commentary directly discussed the role of comedy and drama in acting, and the work that goes into each. The claim that comedy was only meant to look easy resonated with s:

While everyone is entitled to free speech, the attempt to mock comedy as a lesser art form and insulting Reynolds in the process didn’t sit right with ardent fans of both the genre and the actor.

https://twitter.com/FolkloreMarTS/status/1865071871126892794

It’s clear the original tweet struck a nerve, for both Ryan Reynolds and many comedy enthusiasts. Ryan’s response underlines just how much the actor has thought about his craft, from the emotion required to sell a joke to the behind-the-scenes work necessary to put all the parts together. As always, art is subjective. People enjoy different things. Not everything has to be for everyone, and it’s fair to prefer drama to comedy or action thrillers to cozy mysteries.

While it’s fair to have an opinion, it doesn’t seem right to use one actor to attack another — especially in the context of Actors on Actors. Sometimes, the juxtaposition in experience is fertile ground for an interesting and engaging conversation, with differences in perspective adding depth to a conversation. Where there are similarities, they can be discussed; where there are differences, they can be explored. This is a vital point that the original tweet apparently failed to consider but was addressed beautifully by Ryan’s response.

Just when you thought he couldn't get any more adorable...]]>
<![CDATA[

Since being a bona fide heartthrob clearly isn’t enough, Andrew Garfield has somehow tightened his already firm chokehold on my heart with an adorable interaction at a recent red carpet event.

The precious moment took place while the actor appeared at the London premiere of his new movie We Live in Time. While walking the red carpet, Garfield was approached by a little girl who gifted him a friendship bracelet and subsequently caused my ovaries to explode.

While we can’t quite hear what the duo are saying (where’s that viral lip-reader when you need her?), Garfield was sporting a massive grin while interacting with the young girl, who fetched the bracelet out of her tiny pink bunny handbag to allow the moment to reach maximal cuteness.

In lieu of being able to hear what Garfield is saying, the romantic in me likes to think he’s professing his love for a writer he’s never met who’s halfway across the world (it’s me, hi, I’m the writer, it’s me), but I wouldn’t dream of stealing this little girl’s thunder, so let’s assume he was just chatting about her and her heartbreakingly thoughtful gift.

In any case, the acclaimed actor was seen immediately putting the bracelet on his wrist and giving the girl a big hug before completing his red carpet walk (she doesn’t even know how lucky she is). For those already clamoring to identify the lucky recipient of Garfield’s affection, prepare for an even bigger heart-melter: it’s the girl who is playing his on-screen daughter. (Sobs.)

That’s right, lil’ actress Grace Delaney was at the premiere of We Live in Time because she is in the movie, portraying the character of Ella — the daughter of Garfield’s Tobias Durand. The actor simply interacting with a young fan á la Prince Harry would’ve been cute enough, but add in the extra layer of his fatherly instincts and my heart is just about ready to burst.

Garfield’s red carpet interaction wasn’t the only viral moment from the We Live in Time premiere. The actor got heads turning when he was ed at the event with co-star Florence Pugh ⏤ not in person, but in the form of a life-sized cardboard cut-out

Pugh’s 2-D appearance was because she is currently away shooting another movie, but Garfield’s commitment to ensuring Pugh receives equal praise (albeit in cardboard form) is just more evidence that he is the man of my dreams. The co-stars have been promoting We Live in Time over the last few weeks and were recently quizzed on all things superheroes given that they are both MCU alums.

We Live in Time is a drama following the romance between Garfield and Pugh’s characters, and it has been met with widespread praise from critics. In other Garfield news, the actor recently said he could neither confirm nor deny his involvement in Spider-Man 5, which would follow on from his multiverse-jumping role in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

There was also speculation that his ex-girlfriend Emma Stone — who portrayed Gwen Stacy in Sony’s Garfield-starring Amazing Spider-Man franchise — would reprise her role in the Marvel iteration, but this has yet to be officially confirmed. In the meantime, I’m going to rewatch this adorable red carpet interaction and withhold bucketloads of happy tears.

<![CDATA[

A compilation of Andrew Garfield at press events could make up a top-notch comedy movie, and this latest clip of him at the We Live in Time premiere will be my favorite shot.

Some 14 days after Garfield detailed how an intimate scene with Florence Pugh in their latest romantic drama We Live in Time went a “little bit further” than planned, we are now seeing him carrying around a life-sized cut-out of Pugh on the red carpet. Garfield sat with Josh Horowitz at the 92nd Street Y on Oct. 4. for his Happy Sad Confused podcast, revealing how his sex scene with Pugh was rather ionate and they went on with it for longer than expected because neither of them heard “cut.” (via NY Post)

But as lovely as it sounds that the two had such amazing chemistry, the podcast caused a frenzy among fans, because of the impression that Garfield was in a committed relationship with Dr Kate Tomas while filming the scene. As fans dug into the matter, it was revealed that the 41-year-old actor and the 42-year-old spiritual mentor had discreetly parted ways months ago. (via The Mirror) So, their romance was rather short-lived as the two were first spotted together only in March 2024 as a couple.

And now that the air is clear and Garfield is known as a single man, we can openly ship him with Pugh, because who are we kidding? Everyone can see the sparks flying. And to fuel our ambitions, Garfield pulled a hilarious but cute move during the Oct. 17 premiere of We Live in Time at the BFI London Film Festival. Hint: this might remind you of Jason Momoa at the 2020 Golden Globes and Brie Larson during the premiere of Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Garfield was seen carrying around and posing with a life-sized cardboard cut out of Florence Pugh on the red carpet since the latter couldn’t attend the event due to scheduling conflicts. However, she made a kind gesture to apologize for her absence through her Instagram story, writing “It truly hurts not being there to celebrate the release, but I’m raising a glass from very far away. Love to you all.”

A similar move was pulled by Jason Momoa during the 2020 Golden Globes when he brought a cardboard cutout of Game of Thrones co-star Emilia Clarke to the event. Brie Larson also humorously walked around with a cardboard cutout of Marvel co-star Jeremy Renner to promote Avengers: Endgame in 2019. So, we’re glad Garfield was also thoughtful enough to include her co-star during the premiere.

And as expected, audiences loved Garfield’s move. When @DiscussingFilm posted the clip to X, fans had hilarious reactions, calling it a “classic move.” One (@ForbiddenArms) replied with “Andrew Garfield cures my depression,” and we couldn’t agree more. The Spiderman actor has one of the best senses of humor with the most subtle ways of showing it.

The replies section was also filled with people speculating that Garfield might be romantically interested in Pugh, but it’s too soon to judge that. For now, we’ll be enjoying their chemistry in We Live in Time as they pose as a couple navigating their relationship over the course of a decade. With a 79% Rotten Tomatoes score and 7.5 IMDb, the stars have proved to be a good pair on-screen.

Andrew Garfield can do it all. He’s been a war hero, a Jesuit priest, a superhero, a loving dad, and a neurotic YouTube star. Yet, he’s still largely overlooked when the topic is his generation’s best actors.

The 41-year-old Los Angeles native has been acting since he was 21 and has since built a career that spans the screen, big or small, and the stage, with equal charm and precision. With two Oscar nominations, one Emmy nomination, and one Tony win under his belt, he’s already on the path to EGOT greatness. His CV is as rich as it is entertaining, but for this article, we’re narrowing it down to his ten best on-screen performances.

10. The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021) 6c6a1h

Garfield plays evangelist Jim Bakker in this Tammy Faye Bakker biopic led by an Oscar-winning turn from Jessica Chastain. The film takes from the 2000 documentary of the same name, tracing the couple’s rise to fame as the heads of the world’s biggest religious broadcasting network as well as their fall from grace at the hands of scandal.

9. Mainstream (2021) 291v6e

Mainstream is perhaps the most divisive entry to this list. Garfield plays Link an eccentric man who is turned into a YouTube star by Maya Hawke’s filmmaker character. Link is a hit, a view and subscription magnet, but the self-feeding nature of social media soon leads the duo to take things too far for the sake of content. It’s a chaotic film satirizing influencers that dances, dizzily, between brilliance and failure.

8. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) 172cl

Andrew Garfield’s take on the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has been experiencing a renaissance ever since the actor reprised the role in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Although his Peter Parker didn’t get much of a fighting chance, the power of hindsight has crowned Garfield’s performance, which perfectly mixed awkwardness, cocky, and vulnerability, as arguably the best iteration of the character.

7. Under the Silver Lake (2018) 3q5z2k

We use the expression “ahead of its time” too often, but it certainly applies to 2018’s Under the Silver Lake, where Garfield shares the screen with another underrated talent — Riley Keough. This surrealist black comedy will take you on the trip of your life, all while deconstructing and satirizing the Hollywood-centric conspiracy theories that have imbued pop culture for a century.

6. Hacksaw Ridge (2016) 6u2v2d

Hacksaw Ridge earned Garfield his first Oscar nomination in 2017, and for good reason. The Brit-American actor is powerful in this depiction of Desmond Doss, a World War II United States Army Corporal who refused to carry a weapon when he ed the front as a medic. Like most war movies favored by the Academy, you will find bravery and drama in spades in this one.

5. We Live in Time (2024) 6w3x59

Considering how magnetic Garfield was opposite Emma Stone in TASM, there’s a surprising lack of romance in his filmography. Thankfully 2024’s We Live in Time has come to fix this oversight. This brilliant, beautiful look at a decade’s worth of a couple’s relationship with Florence Pugh playing the 41-year-old’s other half, will make you laugh, sob, and reevaluate your life.

4. Under the Banner of Heaven (2022) 171l2v

Religion seems to be more or less of a theme in Garfield’s filmography, but his Emmy-nominated turn in Under the Banner of Heaven is a particularly striking look at a faithful man at odds with his beliefs. Created by Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, this FX limited series depicts the real-life investigation into the murder of Mormon housewife Brenda Lafferty and her baby. Garfield plays Detective Jeb Pyre, who shares in the Mormon faith of the victims.

3. Silence (2016) 5x4a5k

Following in the themes of disillusionment in and criticism of religion, Martin Scorsese’s Silence stars Garfield as a Portuguese Jesuit priest who, ed by Adam Driver in a similar role, searches for Liam Neeson’s Cristóvão Ferreira in 17th century Japan. This historical epic is loaded with detail, philosophical questions, and violence, with Garfield’s character acting as its moral com.

2. Tick, Tick… Boom! (2021) 243nm

Garfield’s second Oscar nomination came with another biopic, this time about Jonathan Larson who wrote Rent and Tick, Tick… Boom! before dying suddenly at 35. This Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed musical is vibrant, bold, and heartfelt, and features the actor in his first-ever singing role for which he practiced over the course of a year.

1. The Social Network (2010) 1q321

Known as one of the greatest films of the 21st century, David Fincher’s The Social Network was a break-out role for Garfield who plays the Eduardo Saverin to Jesse Eisenberg’s Mark Zuckerberg in this Facebook origin story. Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin transform the story of the world’s pioneering social media into one of friendship, betrayal, and loneliness.

It is a beautiful thing when the stars align.]]>
<![CDATA[

It feels almost serendipitous that a film like We Live in Time exists. To have two of our generation’s most magnetic, vulnerable, and charming actors, Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, share a screen and a love story in such a carefully and tastefully constructed romance film feels special.

We Live in Time is directed by John Crowley (Brooklyn, The Goldfinch) — who had previously worked with Garfield in his silver screen debut in 2007’s Boy A — from a screenplay by Nick Payne. It follows a couple, Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield), over the course of a decade, as they fall in love, meet each other’s families, begin a family of their own, and battle terminal illness.

The contours of We Live in Time might feel overly familiar, maybe even dated, but its specifics are surprisingly novel and current. We meet these characters in their thirties, each living in their own particular socioeconomic context, with more or less developed careers, more or less enough money, and two very important past relationships that inform every decision they make regarding their newfound attraction for each other. Not only does this feel true to the reality of finding love in our day and age, but, much like the title suggests, the choice to portray two people in this distinct period of their lives forces the reflections on time (and how we choose to spend it) that permeate We Live In Time‘s entire runtime.

In your thirties, long gone is the wide-eyed recklessness of your ’20s, when everything is possible, and there’s little regard for the consequences for your future self of your current self’s actions and choices. On the other hand, you’re far from achieving the stability and routine of your forties, and there is still so much room for change and growth. Your thirties are really, and usually, the very last time you will have the whole world staring you down and asking you to make a decision regarding your love life, your family life, and your work life, for you’re approaching the phase where all those consequences finally catch up to you.

We Live in Time forces this evolution to an extreme when Almut is diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer, her terminal illness pronouncing and emphasizing the urgency that was already there. By establishing this foundation, a whole world of possibility opens up for Crowley to explore the age of time and, for the most part, he revels in it — starting with the choice to present the narrative non-linearly through constant jumps in time between three parallel timelines in the couple’s relationship. A less capable and inspired director would have hidden behind the gimmick as nothing but a stylish whim, without realizing its potential to drive the story forward and amplify its message.

By jumping forward and backward (and forward again) between the past, present, and future, Crowley illustrates the interconnectedness of time as circular in shape, more akin to a skein of yarn than a straight line, and articulates the complicated causality of the first full decade of actualized adulthood — that every moment is a product of everything we have lived through, and every decision we have made. We don’t live independently of our history, we live in time, and a limited one at that. Cancer forces Almut and Tobias to face the ephemerality of life much sooner and much more intensely than they would have otherwise, though We Live in Time is more interested in expanding this meditation to anyone watching, regardless of how long they think they may live. The cancer, so to speak, is just a vehicle to make the issue more tangible.

One especially poignant scene sees Tobias deliberating between the future and the present, after he realizes he’s falling in love with a woman who might not want children, when becoming a dad is one of his dreams. It’s a tricky conversation to have, and We Live in Time‘s typically naturalistic and realistic tone gains a special brightness in this moment. The characters say the wrong thing and have a hard time explaining themselves, resulting in an aggressive defensiveness that pulls them apart. Almut is less concerned about the future, she’s someone who lives entirely in the present, whereas Tobias, who has recently overcome a painful divorce, sees any new relationship as an investment. He knows time is precious, and he has used too much of it already in a situation that didn’t yield the returns he had hoped for.

Andrew Garfield in A24's 'We Live in Time'

The cancer forces both to change their approach. Does Almut prioritize the little lifetime she still has left, or spend it sick from chemotherapy in the hopes of perhaps having more time in the future? Does she keep her reproductive organs in hopes of having a child one day and risk cancer recurrence, or remove them entirely? Meanwhile, Tobias must learn how to live in the present, and understand it might be just as important, if not more, than the future.

We Live in Time wraps these preoccupations brilliantly in the gorgeous paper of Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, whose faces and talents shine all the brighter when merged together, set alight by the leads’ easygoing, seamless chemistry and approach to their craft. The love story is soul-feeding and soul-crushing in all the right ways; their interactions believable and human, charmingly funny, and effortlessly loaded, propelled by Crowley’s minimalistic directing, and Stuart Bentley’s earthy photography that oscillates between warmth and coolness.

In the end, we’re left wishing only that the screenplay had gone a little further into, and with, these meaty ideas. The ending is too quick to release the tension that had been building up for over an hour, and too simplistic to feel truly satisfying after all the soul-searching the film had been inviting us to do.

We Live in Time is designed to make us emote, and it succeeds; it fluctuates between sensibility and tastefulness, never crossing into emotional manipulation. It’s a romance, no doubt, but you will find a lot more than just butterflies and tears between its frames. Even though it never strays too far from the surface, it raises pertinent questions about what we leave behind when we’re gone, and what we take with us — all while treating us to one of the best romantic pairings in recent memory.
